DESCRIZIONE

In order to achieve a better understanding of sustainability and of its implementation, two main areas of discussion have to be explored in an extensive design process: Sustainability considering theoretical issues and sustainability considering practical issues. Most importantly, the eco-sustainable design depends on the different contexts and on people's attitude. Environment runs to make a balance whereas urban proposals have to be resilient. How then all these effects have to be related with micro-climate, energy efficiency and low impact results, use of solar radiation that can give a bioclimatic response and create a good urban and architectural design? The process of articulating an achievable vision of eco-sustainable design contents implies that one has to address different steps from thinking to doing. Sustainability is not to be seen as a dogmatic approach to the design but as a flexible way of doing well and well-being. We don't have to face sustainability as a force but we should use all sustainability's forces towards a new way of thinking and designing. Metamorphosis of urban environment puts the major issues of sustainability and gives an account of how can be found the degree to reach good results. The “degree” has to be considered as the main issue to reach sustainability that runs - throughout this book- finding “guideling principles”. Following the publication of the ECOPOLIS. Revealing and Enhancing Sustainable Design, this volume concludes the Trilogy on ECOPOLIS. Sustainable Planning and Design Principles Erasmus Intensive Programme. This book sets the scene of where eco-sustainable urban design is at the moment and then develops theoretical topics and issues; it gives the key principles of sustainable urban and architectural design and the scenarios to achieve this through new concepts and ideas; Introduces how sustainable building design could be a key element to achieve technology with contemporary forces. Finally, it faces ways on training for sustainability on possible future urban development.
This Series seeks to present some new conceptions concerning the today's and future cities role in supporting sustainable communities. The Series will discuss the latest issues in planning, designing and building a better future achieving sustainability through urban and architecture design. CITIES, DESIGN&SUSTAINABILITY Series, is attempting to better understand some factors and principles which should stimulate everyone and condition a range of choices about the future of urban life. It will address issues on new ways of managing our cities and responding to the key current matters of urban change. The need to bring new values to the regeneration and development of urban areas has long been accepted. However, the unrecognized management of natural resources and ecological issues occurring in cities can be for urban designers and architects an alternative basis for urban and architectural design. The making of real sustainable cities has to be considered as a cultural issue concerning the reconciliation between community living, urban environment and nature. The discussion on how to create a sustainable future should be directed towards implementing the sustainable city.
