10/01/2012 - A home without a table is almost inconceivable. The table is one of the most defining pieces of furniture in any home. It is also the centre of all kinds of activities, the most important being eating, drinking and socialising. Most work also tends to be done on a table of some kind. So Arco has designed tables for every conceivable purpose, each with its own unique character and distinctive features.
The extensive furniture collection that Arco has created over the years includes countless pieces of elegant yet functional contemporary furniture that can be used in many different ways and settings. In recent years the company has also devoted considerable attention to striking design of a more experimental nature. Tables feature prominently in this endeavour. The ingenious combination of technical innovation, high quality design and skilled craftsmanship has made Arco one of the leading specialists in its field.
This has emerged organically out of the company's history. Arco started out as a company that made picture frames (in 1904) and went on to make small pieces of furniture. For years the company produced traditional magazine racks, coat stands and solid oak coffee tables. In the seventies modern functionalism made its entry and formed the basis for sound technical and aesthetic development. A furniture maker from the start, with a great love of the natural properties of wood and the total dedication shown by four successive generations, Arco is now one of the most well-equipped production companies in the Netherlands and one of the most prestigious brand names in the world of contemporary furniture design. Jorre van Ast, the latest progeny of this family of furniture makers, has recently taken over the management of the company.
One of the most striking Arco tables is the robust Extenso Table, which can be extended to an impressive three metres and forty-four centimetres in length. The Slim Table is a seemingly impossible combination of svelte elegance and unshakable stability. And lastly the Nomad Table, which is surprisingly light thanks to the innovative construction of the top and easy to dismantle thanks to the use of a traditional joinery technique: the legs have a wood thread so they can simply be screwed into and unscrewed from the top. It is the perfect piece of furniture for those with a nomadic lifestyle. The Slim Table and the Nomad Table have both won various design awards. Advanced technology, traditional craftsmanship and new inventions are combined in these pieces of furniture, which often have a complex interior.
The table, in all of its simplicity and versatility, is Arco's strength and focus for the future.
